Artillery had changed out of all recognition and the killing power of the machine gun soon rendered the vestiges of 19th Century warfare redundant. The problem was that tactics had not developed to make best use of the new technologies resulting in wholesale slaughter on the Western Front. A new terror weapon emerged in the form of gas which was first used by the Germans on the Eastern Front and then with terrible effect at Ypres on the Western Front in 1915. Arguably the most dramatic development was the tank, developed in great secrecy by the British and first used at the Somme in 1916. It would become a decisive weapon when combined with other arms as demonstrated during the Battle of Cambrai in 1917. Curiously, the Germans missed out on tank technology and were only able to make use of a few captured British and French tanks.
