This is a work of art - and so it should be for Mill Reef's owner Paul Mellon was the greatest art collector of his era and in 1971, by winning the Derby, the Eclipse, the King George and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, Mill Reef became his finest four legged treasure. What's more much of Mellon's art was then housed in a building at the centre of the stud where Mill Reef was raised in Virginia, USA. Only this film can take us from those masterpieces in paint to others in the paddock. But this second collaboration of the Sir Ivor "team" of Hugh McIlvanney and Kit Owens does much more than that. For in August 1972 Mill Reef broke a leg on the gallops and what had been a study of athletic preparation became coverage of a casualty ward with a drama and poignancy exceeding even his glories on the track. Brough Scott Narrated by Albert Finney
