HERMANN GOERING was one of Germanys foremost flying aces of WWI, later rising through the ranks of the Nazi Party and founding the Gestapo, Nazi Germanys secret police force, in 1933. For the majority of the war Goering acted as Commander in Chief of the Luftwaffe, responsible for devastating much of Britain during the intense and murderous bombing campaign known as the Blitz. Named as Hitlers successor, Goering only received his appointment as leader of the Nazis during the Nuremberg Trials. Convicted of crimes against humanity, he was sentenced to death, yet was found dead the night before his execution, poisoned by cyanide. Historians still struggle with his suicide, one of the most mysterious of the 20th Century.
