In the summer of 2000, French underwater archaeologist Franck Goddio and his team of scientists travelled to Egypt to uncover the remains of the lost cities in and around Alexandria, the site of Cleopatra's drowned palace. Franck and his team explored a newly discovered site just outside the ancient city beneath the waters of Abu Kir Bay. Here lie ruins of a large temple and a fantastic collection of Egyptian, Classical and Christian artefacts that were discovered in 1999 by Franck's team. Their mission: to hunt for clues about what happened to destroy these ancient cities. Earthquakes, tidal waves and shifting sediments helped to put a series of well-established civilisations under water.

This programme combines footage of their underwater work, pictures of the many artefacts and building remains, as well as interviews with Franck Goddio and members of his team. Special computer graphics help bring this lost world to life.
