For four generations the Kilcher family has lived off the land – and off the grid – at their six hundred-acre homestead in Homer, Alaska. Living off the grid without running water or electricity, the family must hunt, gather, garden and raise livestock in order to provide enough food for their survival. This ‘simple life’ however, is far from straightforward. After one of the harshest Alaskan winters on record, the Kilchers find their supplies running dangerously low. As precious spring and summer days return to the village, it’s a race against the clock for the family to gather enough food, fuel and resources to survive another winter.
