If you were ever stranded in the wilderness, there are few people who'd be handier to have with you than Bear Grylls. As a former SAS man and survival expert, Bear's adventures have seen him travel all over the world to prove himself as the ultimate survivor. You name it, he's tackled it, taking on extreme survival dares in some of the world's most hostile environments. In Series 3 & 4 of Born Survivor, Bear travels to the four corners of the Earth, revealing what it takes to stay alive when faced with the toughest of conditions.
Along the way he takes on the deserts of Southwestern Texas, runs thousands of feet through lava, ash and cinders, swims to a deserted Island, eats a tarantula for breakfast and ventures deep into the heart of the Vietnamese jungle, revealing the skills and survival tips you need to stay alive in some of the most extreme locations on the planet.
SAHARA Bear parachutes into the hottest place on Earth to tackle extreme survival challenges. He'll demonstrate how to get out alive from the towering dunes of the Sahara desert. Drinking your own urine and eating camel spiders - so feared by soldiers - are just two things which could keep you out of trouble and protect you against dehydration and heat-stroke: killers that can creep up on you within hours. To survive in the Sahara means eating whatever you can, from one of the world's deadliest scorpions to the Berber delicacy of raw goat's testicles.
SIBERIA Bear Grylls parachutes into the Siberian wilderness, one of the coldest and harshest places on the planet. He has to deal with extreme cold as the temperature drops to minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit, and shelters in a cave where he snacks on hibernating mosquito larvae. To speed himself along, Bear makes a toboggan from a deer skin. In one of his most extreme experiences, he swims under the ice of a frozen lake to show just how dangerous it is if you fall through the ice.
SUMATRA Bear Grylls goes into the Pacific Ring of Fire, as he takes on a week of challenges in an area devastated by the 2004 tsunami. He is dropped into the Indian Ocean and must survive on a deserted island without any running water. Bear uses all his ingenuity to find food and fresh drinking water, but the stakes are high. Finally, Bear makes his escape through the pounding surf on a raft made from bamboo.
SOUTH DAKOTA Bear's latest adventure takes him to South Dakota, home to not one but three of America's most incredible wilderness areas: the Black Hills, the Great Plains and the inhospitable Badlands. In the Black Hills, Bear faces treacherous granite cliffs, explores an abandoned gold mine and survives a dangerous electrical storm. On the Great Plains he comes face-to-face with a charging bison herd and in the Badlands he battles 100-degree heat, undrinkable water and some of the most unstable terrain in the world.
YUKON Bear heads to the Yukon, one of the remotest and coldest places in North America. Following in the footsteps of the pioneers who ventured here in search of gold over 100 years ago, Bear fights his way across frozen glacial wastelands, battles to stay afloat in treacherous white water and finds himself deep underground in an abandoned gold mine. It's tough terrain where humans are well down the food chain: black bears, grizzlies and polar bears can all be found here.
ROMANIA Bear enters the heart of Dracula country - the Carpathian Mountains of Transylvania. The forests are teeming with ferocious predators and before long the inevitable happens as Bear comes face-to-face with a large adult male brown bear. Battling the rugged landscape, Bear slides down treacherous gorges and climbs sheer limestone cliffs: this is no walk in the park. Finally, Bear heads underground; he follows a subterranean river through dark underground caves in the hope of cutting beneath the tortuous terrain above. Along the way Bear feeds on nature's delights: snails, trout and apples found in a pile of bear excrement.
TURKEY Bear takes on the Anatolian plateau in Turkey, parachuting into a cold mountain lake. He improvises a raft out of his parachute and battles white-water rapids until he's confronted by a massive 120 foot waterfall. Using a homemade wood and rope ladder, step-by-step Bear lowers himself down a sheer 100 foot rockface. When the ladder runs out he's forced to jump. Bear ventures onto the Turkish Steppe where it's hot and dry and there's little sign of life. He traps a lizard and eats a deadly Death Stalker scorpion.
BELIZE Bear continues his adventures in the jungles of Belize. Dropped at the top of a 700 foot waterfall, he battles his way down treacherous rocks but slips and is left hanging by his fingertips over a raging white-water river. In the rain- soaked jungle he comes face to face with a 9 foot boa constrictor and feasts on the creepiest of crawlies. He vine-swings into a huge limestone cavern only to find himself trapped by the swollen waters of an underground river. Bear builds a raft and heads downstream, heading for the coast. As darkness falls there is still no sign of open water
TEXAS Bear falls to Earth from an upturned bi-plane to lock horns with the deserts of Southwestern Texas. He's up against some of the harshest terrain in the U.S. as rainy-season storms generate flashfloods that shape this landscape into jagged chasms. The rest of the year is brutally hot and finding water is the biggest challenge. As Bear travels through this parched land he traverses deep gorges, locates an oasis in the middle of the desert and takes on a diamondback rattlesnake.
ALASKA Dropped into the Chugach Mountains by the Alaska Air National Guard, Bear ice-hops across a frozen lake, rappels off the edge of a crumbling glacier and breaks out of a melting snow-cave. In black bear-infested forests he turns a fallen tree into an aerial runway and is left hanging by his fingertips when a log bridge collapses. On a raft made out of oil drums Bear takes to the high seas, gets up close and personal with humpbacks and is left stranded on an iceberg. In a final leap to safety Bear narrowly avoids being crushed between the ice and a passing fishing trawler.
URBAN SURVIVOR In a special edition of Born Survivor , Bear finds himself in a new kind of jungle - a concrete jungle. Just because he's partially inside, doesn't mean he's out of the woods as Bear uses the same wilderness survival techniques to stay alive in a post-disaster city. Coming ashore in a deserted shipyard, Bear scales a tower crane, finds food 200 feet up in the rafters of a factory, sets traps in a derelict boiler house and shows how to survive the city when all the comforts you take for granted have gone.
THE INSIDE STORY Bear travels the globe, taking on the world's toughest environments to show you how to survive, but he is never alone. A small and dedicated crew follows him every step of the way. In this behind-the-scenes episode, meet the cameraman and his safety expert who testify to how it really feels to follow in Bear's footsteps. From dark caves in Romania, where Bear led them through flooded underground tunnels, to the deserts of Texas, where they were forced to wing walk to get the shots, this episode reveals the crew and the lengths they go to when shooting Born Survivor .
