In this three-part special, learn more about Otto Kilcher and see the innovations this creative family has devised to aid in living off the land. Otto Kilcher, the cattleman of the family, sees life differently than most folks. Some people think he’s crazy, but he’ll tell you it’s just his willingness to accept whatever life on the homestead brings to him. Otto’s sense of humor and fun is infectious, even while doing back-breaking work, and his tenacity and ingenuity inspires family and neighbours alike. For the Kilchers, necessity certainly is the mother of invention and their subsistence lifestyle requires that they not only re-use and recycle, but also reinvent. Otto digs around in his ‘bone yard’ to make the perfect chuck wagon for this year’s cattle drive. He and Eivin also craft a hay hauling sled out of the roof of an old car. Meanwhile Atz and wife Bonnie keep marital harmony by designing not only a functional, but comfortable double outhouse. While the men are out hunting, Otto’s wife Charlotte and daughter-in-law Eve repair the chicken coop. As the Kilcher men would say, it takes a special type of woman to marry into the Kilcher family. Kilcher innovation isn’t limited to just tools and machinery; sometimes innovation means saving yourself from the harsh Alaskan elements and the natural dangers of the lifestyle.

TEXAS Bear falls to Earth from an upturned bi-plane to lock horns with the deserts of Southwestern Texas. He's up against some of the harshest terrain in the U.S. as rainy-season storms generate flashfloods that shape this landscape into jagged chasms. The rest of the year is brutally hot and finding water is the biggest challenge. As Bear travels through this parched land he traverses deep gorges, locates an oasis in the middle of the desert and takes on a diamondback rattlesnake.
ALASKA Dropped into the Chugach Mountains by the Alaska Air National Guard, Bear ice-hops across a frozen lake, rappels off the edge of a crumbling glacier and breaks out of a melting snow-cave. Dropped at the top of a 700 foot waterfall, he battles his way down treacherous rocks but slips and is left hanging by his fingertips over a raging white-water river. In the rain- soaked jungle he comes face to face with a 9 foot boa constrictor and feasts on the creepiest of crawlies. As darkness falls there is still no sign of open water
URBAN SURVIVOR In a special edition of Born Survivor , Bear finds himself in a new kind of jungle - a concrete jungle. Just because he's partially inside, doesn't mean he's out of the woods as Bear uses the same wilderness survival techniques to stay alive in a post-disaster city. Coming ashore in a deserted shipyard, Bear scales a tower crane, finds food 200 feet up in the rafters of a factory, sets traps in a derelict boiler house and shows how to survive the city when all the comforts you take for granted have gone.
THE INSIDE STORY Bear travels the globe, taking on the world's toughest environments to show you how to survive, but he is never alone. A small and dedicated crew follows him every step of the way. In this behind-the-scenes episode, meet the cameraman and his safety expert who testify to how it really feels to follow in Bear's footsteps. As Nomes ice pack melts during the summer, the isolated, ramshackle town of eccentrics and outcasts booms with excitement as pioneer gold seekers rush to get out onto the water. Miners dive and dredge to scour the bottom of the sea from custom-built, barely seaworthy rigs in a race to haul in as much gold as possible before the waters become too frigid to dive. Bering Sea Gold illustrates a world like none seen before “ one where the danger is palpable and the stakes are high. Success in the waters will give the dredgers the hope and means to continue “ and maybe even make them rich. Failure could yield a vast array of consequences “ from possible jail time to injury, and even death.
