It is like a round the world trip from hell “ from journalists who are kidnapped by insurgents in North West Iraq, to Sao Paulo, where party boy Brendan Cosso was tempted by the seemingly easy money to smuggle cocaine into Bali, followed by life in a notorious Asian prison filled with westerners who fall foul of the drug laws. These people are often witness to horrendous events and their experience in a country far away from home will stay with them forever. Sometimes they are just in the wrong place at the wrong time, other times simply the victims of bad luck, but often the result of bad decisions. The stories in Banged Up Abroad will stay with you long after you have finished watching.
A multitude of foreigners will succumb to the temptation of drug smuggling for supposedly easy money, only to live to regret it for the rest of their lives. Australian Tim Schrader was financially struggling as a teacher in Bangkok when he agreed to smuggle heroin into the US. He was caught and faced the death penalty. Michael Morey was a music-loving hippie who fell in love with a woman he met in Trinidad, but when he experienced financial hardship he agreed to smuggle cocaine from Ecuador to Europe. His career as a drug mule was cut short when he was arrested in Madrid airport whilst carrying four kilos of cocaine. One of the most notorious drug stories is that of Billy Hayes, whose misdemeanours were the basis for the 1978 film Midnight Express. Now Billy tells the real story of his journey to freedom. Sometimes people are just in the wrong place at the wrong time, like young American backpacker Mark Wedeven who was crossing from Panama to Colombia overland through the notorious Darién Gap. But he got more than he bargained for when he and his companions were ambushed by murderous paramilitaries. Tom Lynch and John White were working in the oil fields during the Persian Gulf War of 1990 when they were captured by the Mukhabarat “ Saddams infamous and terrifying secret police force “ and plunged into a brutal world of torture and execution.
At times, the circumstances that surround an overseas imprisonment are hard to fathom. One such case was British man David Scott who found himself facing up to 14 years in prison when his girlfriends estranged husband evoked the Philippines adultery laws to ˜punish his wife. Often, people fall foul of drug laws and it is a matter of time before the law catches up with them and they are looking at the world through bars. Chris Chance and his wife were living their dream life in Spain, but when they fell on hard times Chris developed a taste for drug smuggling. It was the start of a series of daredevil adventures on the roads, in the air and across the ocean that eventually landed him in prison. Henry Hills life was the inspiration for the classic movie Goodfellas, it told the true story of his rise and fall in the New York mob. He was famously busted dealing dope against the orders of his boss and turned from an invincible wise guy into a mafia snitch with a price on his head. These people are often witness to horrendous events and their experience in a country far away from home will stay with them forever. Sometimes they are just in the wrong place at the wrong time, other times just the victims of bad luck, but often the result of bad decisions. The stories in Banged Up Abroad will stay with you long after you have finished watching.
Latif Yahia was an ordinary Iraqi citizen until he was forced to become the body double for Saddam Husseins eldest son. He survived forcible plastic surgery, imprisonment and numerous assassination attempts before finally escaping the country. Other mind-blowing episodes include Erik Aude, a Hollywood actor imprisoned in Pakistan for opium smuggling, a man arrested in Saudi Arabia for being gay, a truck driver kidnapped by Islamist insurgents and a British nurse who went on the run after being busted for smuggling in Argentina.
The new season includes the extraordinary story of an orthodox Hasidic Jew who becomes a cocaine kingpin in Brazil, a father and son smuggling team busted in China, two backpackers abducted in Panama on an orchid hunting expedition and an American drugs courier caught in Nicaragua and accused of being a Drug Enforcement Administration agent. From gruesome jails to chilling kidnappings, live through the panic, tears and desperation as each frightful story unfolds.
Get the real story behind the movie Argo. Retired CIA officer and master of disguise Antonio Mendez tells the story of how “ at the height of the Iranian hostage crisis “ he came up with an audacious plan to rescue six diplomats who had escaped from the U.S. Embassy in Tehran. When schoolteacher Howard Marks agrees to help an old friend finish off a drug deal, he has no idea that it will be the start of a new career. Attracted by the easy money and the thrill of being a smuggler, he is soon running a huge transatlantic operation and believes he is unstoppable. In Las Vegas, mafia associate Frank Cullotta works for the notorious mob boss Tony Spilotro. When the FBI develops an informant on the inside of the gang its the beginning of the end for organised crime in Las Vegas. Cullotta becomes a snitch for the FBI and the mafia puts a contract on his life, leading him to enter the Witness Protection Program. Taking you inside more accounts of capture, incarceration and terror far away from home, this popular series includes intimate interviews and dramatic re-enactments. Live through the panic, the tears and the desperation as each dreadful story unfolds.

For two million years, glaciers have been melting into the Bering Sea and depositing sediments rich with gold into its waters. As Nomes ice pack melts during the summer, the isolated, ramshackle town of eccentrics and outcasts booms with excitement as pioneer gold seekers rush to get out onto the water. Miners dive and dredge to scour the bottom of the sea from custom-built, barely seaworthy rigs in a race to haul in as much gold as possible before the waters become too frigid to dive. Bering Sea Gold illustrates a world like none seen before “ one where the danger is palpable and the stakes are high. Success in the waters will give the dredgers the hope and means to continue “ and maybe even make them rich. Failure could yield a vast array of consequences: from possible jail time to injury and even death.
In the frontier town of Nome, Alaska, there’s a gold rush on. But you’ve never seen gold mining like this before. Here, the precious metal isn’t found in the ground. It’s sitting in the most unlikely of places: the bottom of the frigid, unpredictable Bering Sea. And there are a handful of people willing to risk it all to bring it to the surface. The summer season kicks off as the captains race to reclaim the gold the melting ice forced them to leave behind. But Mother Nature never gives up her treasures without a fight and the miners will have to battle throughout the season, making sure they work for every single piece of gold they find. When a huge storm descends upon Nome it raises tensions in the fleet and the dredgers must put their personal issues aside and work together to battle the rough seas. This season is as explosive as ever: a rocky father-and-son relationship poised to detonate, a near fatal mishap and an environmental disaster are just some of the challenges facing the crew. As the end of the season approaches it’s a no-holds-barred situation as every man and woman fights for what is rightfully theirs.

Hypothermia, frostbite, and (maybe) the payoff of a lifetime. Every summer as the glacial ice melts around Nome, Alaska, a handful of fortune seekers hunt for gold at the bottom of the Bering Sea. Three new teams of local adventurers The Shamrock, The Clark and The Lazy Gators have arrived for the challenge of a lifetime. It is a bone-chilling quest to strike it rich, but can they fight the frigid waters without fighting amongst themselves? Some of the planet's most extreme conditions won't deter this handful of gold-hungry men and women whose very livelihoods depend on mining the wet and frozen gold hidden under four feet of solid ice. Split-second thinking, extreme focus and teamwork are key to staying alive under the ice. The risks are great, but the payoff could be even greater. From Thom Beers' Original Productions, the creators of the Emmy Award-winning Deadliest Catch, comes an unmissable new five-part series, Bering Sea Gold: Under The Ice.

In Nome, Alaska, miners risk their lives diving below the ice on the frozen Bering Sea for a fortune in gold. As the new season gets underway it doesn’t take long for it to become glaringly apparent to the fleet’s greenhorns and veterans alike how dangerous this profession is. As some of the divers are forced out to an area of deep sea the potential of nitrogen poisoning is on everyone’s mind. As the season progresses and the hard reality of the winter season begins to set in, partnerships become strained as tempers and egos flare, resulting in some intense confrontations. The challenges of finding gold are wearing on the miners. While one miner nearly loses his life, another hits his biggest payday ever. As the season comes to a close, friendships have crumbled and relationships are near collapse. With temperatures rising and ice melting around them, time is running out for the fleet of dredgers to get on the gold. As the ice begins to fracture, so do relationships and one team sees their dream of becoming gold rich float out to sea.

If you were ever stranded in the wilderness, there are few people who'd be handier to have with you than Bear Grylls. A former SAS man and survival expert, Bear Grylls' adventures have seen him travel all over the world to prove himself as the ultimate survivor . You name it, he's tackled it, taking on extreme survival dares in some of the world's most hostile environments. In Series 1 & 2 of Born Survivor Bear travels to the four corners of the Earth and has to stay alive when faced with the toughest of conditions.
Along the way he skydives over Mount Everest, wades through the swamps of Florida's everglades and drags himself across the killer Sahara. Armed with a few supplies and the clothes on his back, see how Bear claws his way back to civilization while demonstrating incredible survival techniques.
To really feel confident of journeying into the wild, you need to know how to survive in a range of different locations and in the face of a range of extreme challenges. Bear reveals the tradecraft and survival tips you need to stay alive in some of the toughest locations on Earth; from finding water and food in the baking salt flats of Mexico, to falling into the ice of Siberia, to battling sharks to make it off a desert island in Indonesia and skinning and eating snakes in the mangroves of Panama, Bear offers you a guide to survival in the kinds of places where, without the right survival skills, you wouldn't last a day. Bear then shows how to deal with deadly animals, find food and battle the elements - everything you need to make it home in one piece. He takes on some of the world's most dangerous snakes, including the deadly Egyptian Cobra, and fishes for catfish in the murky waters of the Louisiana swamps using his finger as rod and bait. On his travels, Bear meets tribes who survive in the toughest terrains, eats raw goat's testicles with the Ber Ber tribe in the Sahara and hunts for porcupine with the San bushmen of Namibia.
PACIFIC ISLAND Bear heads west off the Panama coast into the Pacific and is dropped on a sandbar. He swims to a deserted island and begins his quest to find enough food and water to keep him alive. He uses native spear-fishing techniques to catch trigger fish and free dives for oyster. Bear builds a raft and sets out to sea finding a small island covered in guano and cacti. Back on his raft, Bear rides out a thunderstorm and chooses a very uncomfortable way to hydrate himself - it's not pretty, but it could save your life in an emergency. MONTANA Bear travels to Big Sky Country: Montana, one of the last untouched and remote areas in the United States. Bear begins his journey by paragliding 12,000 feet above the Rockies and it takes all of Bear's skills to negotiate huge waterfalls and traverse vast gullies. He makes the most of abandoned debris, puts his strength to the test climbing sky high and makes his great escape upon a moving train.
PATAGONIA Bear Grylls faces a series of extreme survival challenges in one of the most dangerous locations on Earth. This time, he parachutes onto a treacherous ice field in Southern Patagonia. Picking his way through the challenging terrain of the Patagonian tundra, Bear grubs around for worms and beetles to eat. He tackles a frozen bog and attempts to sail a makeshift raft across an icy lake, as he takes on one of the toughest and most diverse territories in the world.
SAHARA Bear parachutes into the hottest place on Earth to tackle extreme survival challenges. He'll demonstrate how to get out alive from the towering dunes of the Sahara desert. Drinking your own urine and eating camel spiders - so feared by soldiers - are just two things which could keep you out of trouble and protect you against dehydration and heat-stroke: killers that can creep up on you within hours. To survive in the Sahara means eating whatever you can, from one of the world's deadliest scorpions to the Berber delicacy of raw goat's testicles.
SIBERIA Bear Grylls parachutes into the Siberian wilderness, one of the coldest and harshest places on the planet. He has to deal with extreme cold as the temperature drops to minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit, and shelters in a cave where he snacks on hibernating mosquito larvae. To speed himself along, Bear makes a toboggan from a deer skin. In one of his most extreme experiences, he swims under the ice of a frozen lake to show just how dangerous it is if you fall through the ice.
SOUTH DAKOTA Bear's latest adventure takes him to South Dakota, home to not one but three of America's most incredible wilderness areas: the Black Hills, the Great Plains and the inhospitable Badlands. In the Black Hills, Bear faces treacherous granite cliffs, explores an abandoned gold mine and survives a dangerous electrical storm. On the Great Plains he comes face-to-face with a charging bison herd and in the Badlands he battles 100-degree heat, undrinkable water and some of the most unstable terrain in the world. YUKON Bear heads to the Yukon, one of the remotest and coldest places in North America. Following in the footsteps of the pioneers who ventured here in search of gold over 100 years ago, Bear fights his way across frozen glacial wastelands, battles to stay afloat in treacherous white water and finds himself deep underground in an abandoned gold mine. It's tough terrain where humans are well down the food chain: black bears, grizzlies and polar bears can all be found here. ROMANIA Bear enters the heart of Dracula country - the Carpathian Mountains of Transylvania. The forests are teeming with ferocious predators and before long the inevitable happens as Bear comes face-to-face with a large adult male brown bear. Battling the rugged landscape, Bear slides down treacherous gorges and climbs sheer limestone cliffs: this is no walk in the park. Finally, Bear heads underground; he follows a subterranean river through dark underground caves in the hope of cutting beneath the tortuous terrain above. Along the way Bear feeds on nature's delights: snails, trout and apples found in a pile of bear excrement.
SUMATRA Bear Grylls goes into the Pacific Ring of Fire, as he takes on a week of challenges in an area devastated by the 2004 tsunami. He is dropped into the Indian Ocean and must survive on a deserted island without any running water. Bear uses all his ingenuity to find food and fresh drinking water, but the stakes are high. Finally, Bear makes his escape through the pounding surf on a raft made from bamboo.
TEXAS Bear falls to Earth from an upturned bi-plane to lock horns with the deserts of Southwestern Texas. He's up against some of the harshest terrain in the U.S. as rainy-season storms generate flashfloods that shape this landscape into jagged chasms. The rest of the year is brutally hot and finding water is the biggest challenge. As Bear travels through this parched land he traverses deep gorges, locates an oasis in the middle of the desert and takes on a diamondback rattlesnake. ALASKA Dropped into the Chugach Mountains by the Alaska Air National Guard, Bear ice-hops across a frozen lake, rappels off the edge of a crumbling glacier and breaks out of a melting snow-cave. In black bear-infested forests he turns a fallen tree into an aerial runway and is left hanging by his fingertips when a log bridge collapses. On a raft made out of oil drums Bear takes to the high seas, gets up close and personal with humpbacks and is left stranded on an iceberg. In a final leap to safety Bear narrowly avoids being crushed between the ice and a passing fishing trawler.
TURKEY Bear takes on the Anatolian plateau in Turkey, parachuting into a cold mountain lake. He improvises a raft out of his parachute and battles white-water rapids until he's confronted by a massive 120 foot waterfall. Using a homemade wood and rope ladder, step-by-step Bear lowers himself down a sheer 100 foot rockface. When the ladder runs out he's forced to jump. Bear ventures onto the Turkish Steppe where it's hot and dry and there's little sign of life. He traps a lizard and eats a deadly Death Stalker scorpion. BELIZE Bear continues his adventures in the jungles of Belize. Dropped at the top of a 700 foot waterfall, he battles his way down treacherous rocks but slips and is left hanging by his fingertips over a raging white-water river. In the rain- soaked jungle he comes face to face with a 9 foot boa constrictor and feasts on the creepiest of crawlies. He vine-swings into a huge limestone cavern only to find himself trapped by the swollen waters of an underground river. Bear builds a raft and heads downstream, heading for the coast. As darkness falls there is still no sign of open water
URBAN SURVIVOR In a special edition of Born Survivor , Bear finds himself in a new kind of jungle - a concrete jungle. Just because he's partially inside, doesn't mean he's out of the woods as Bear uses the same wilderness survival techniques to stay alive in a post-disaster city. Coming ashore in a deserted shipyard, Bear scales a tower crane, finds food 200 feet up in the rafters of a factory, sets traps in a derelict boiler house and shows how to survive the city when all the comforts you take for granted have gone. THE INSIDE STORY Bear travels the globe, taking on the world's toughest environments to show you how to survive, but he is never alone. A small and dedicated crew follows him every step of the way. In this behind-the-scenes episode, meet the cameraman and his safety expert who testify to how it really feels to follow in Bear's footsteps. From dark caves in Romania, where Bear led them through flooded underground tunnels, to the deserts of Texas, where they were forced to wing walk to get the shots, this episode reveals the crew and the lengths they go to when shooting Born Survivor .
