On DVD this BAFTA-nominated Discovery Channel film from director Jennifer Peedom "Sherpa - Trouble on Everest" takes a poignant look at how Mount Everest’s Sherpa community united in grief and anger to reclaim the mountain, following the deadly avalanche that struck on 18 th April, 2014, which killed sixteen of their members.
The project originally began as a documentary about the upcoming climbing season from the Sherpas’ point of view, following a highly-publicised confrontation in 2013 between them and a group of western climbers. Peedom and her team planned to focus on legendary Sherpa Phurba Tashi’s world record-breaking attempt to summit Everest for the 22 nd time.
Instead, they captured the single deadliest day in the mountain’s modern history after an avalanche struck the Khumbu Icefall, the area just above base camp. Through the voices of the guides themselves, their families and the climbers who were preparing to summit when the disaster struck, Sherpa chronicles a historic moment of tragedy and resistance. The disaster provoked a drastic reappraisal of the Everest climbing industry, and served as a turning point for many of the Sherpas and their families as they considered whether they should even continue at all.

Railroad Alaska follows the elite crew of workers – brakemen, engineers, construction crews, mechanics and train drivers – as they battle ferocious weather and treacherous terrain to keep the State of Alaska’s critical five-hundred-mile-long railroad rolling through the extreme winter. The off-grid homesteaders rely completely on the railroad as their connection to supplies through the harsh Alaskan winters. The train crews regularly have to battle through severe snowstorms to reach their destinations and malfunctioning equipment is just one more hurdle for them to overcome before they can deliver their vital loads. A broken-down school bus would be a simple problem in many places but snow, blizzards and an icy hill ascent make for an interesting rescue effort. The railroad mechanics have to deal with a derailed snowplough blocking the rail line, and a recovery mission through avalanche territory tests James Cuff to the limit. Choosing to live life off-grid is not a light decision for anyone and as the families deal with all that winter has to throw at them they must sometimes question their lifestyle choice. But these unique people have the pioneering spirit and face every challenge head-on, using their ingenuity and hard-won survival skills every day, not just to survive off-grid, but to live life to the full.
